Absurd oaths

The Herald this morning reports on "Bishop" Brian Tamaki's latest move to transform his church into a wacky personality cult: forcing a personal oath of loyalty on his followers. Garth George - writing in his own words this time - denounces the move, exclaiming

how 700 Kiwi men could accept this nonsense and swear lifetime fealty to a mere fallible mortal is quite beyond me.
Meanwhile, sometime in the next few weeks, new Green MP David Clendon will be forced by law to swear lifetime fealty to a mere fallible mortal. And George - a royalist - will regard this as entirely natural and unproblematic. He is nothing but a hypocrite.
